Maura Healey (D) announced Wednesday that she's endorsing Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig (D) in the New Hampshire governor's race.

"Joyce has delivered again and again for Manchester — her record of success speaks for itself. I know firsthand the strength and values she brings to the table, and I’m so excited to endorse her campaign for Governor of NH. Let’s goooo!!!" Healey tweeted.

Healey won her gubernatorial election against Republican Geoff Diehl in Massachusetts last November, becoming one of the first two openly lesbian women to win the governor's office.

In a statement, Craig said she was "grateful" to have Healey's support.

“Governor Healey is a staunch advocate for women and families and I am grateful for her support in our campaign for Governor of New Hampshire. Governor Healey grew up in New Hampshire and I know she cares deeply about our state," Craig said.

“We have a chance to build a new future for New Hampshire and elect a Governor who will support local communities, strengthen public education, build affordable housing and defend reproductive rights. That’s why I’m running – to ensure everyone in our state has the opportunity to succeed, no matter where they live," she added.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) announced Wednesday he would not be seeking a fifth term after saying last month he was likely not interested in another bid.

Craig is one of two Democrats who have formally announced a bid for the governor's mansion. Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington is also running for New Hampshire governor on the Democratic side.

Meanwhile, former state Senate president and former New Hampshire Senate candidate Chuck Morse (R) launched a bid for Sununu's seat Wednesday. Former Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) has suggested she could also be launching a bid soon.

"I am grateful to Governor Sununu for his hard work over the past seven years to improve our quality of life and for always fighting for all Granite Staters," she said in a statement.

"Our next Governor must be a tough and tested conservative who will fight to ensure that New Hampshire remains safe, prosperous, and free. I look forward to announcing some big news in the coming days," she added.

Biden leads Kennedy by 60 points in New Hampshire: survey https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4105465-biden-leads-kennedy-by-60-points-in-new-hampshire-survey/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 16:33:55 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4105465 Around 70 percent of New Hampshire Democrats support President Biden in the 2024 Democratic primary field, according to a new University of New Hampshire poll.

Biden holds a sizable 60-point lead over his closest competitor, anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who received 10 percent support in the poll. Author Marianne Williamson received only 4 percent.

Despite the incumbent's sizable lead, questions still remain over whether Biden can win the New Hampshire primary because he may not be on the ballot.

The Democratic Party named South Carolina as its first primary state for 2024, but a New Hampshire law requires it to go first nationally, creating a situation where Biden may be left off the ballot entirely.

According to the poll, if Biden is left off the ballot, 65 percent of respondents said they would write him in anyway. Sixty-seven percent of Biden respondents said they are “definitely decided” on supporting the president.

The two primary opponents also lack in the second-choice ranking, with a plurality of voters saying they would select another candidate that isn’t on the ballot if their first choice wasn’t possible.

The poll also showed Biden as the most favorable candidate by a wide margin. Sixty-five percent of respondents said they have a favorable view of Biden, compared to 9 percent for Kennedy and 5 percent for Williamson.

Kennedy was the most polarizing candidate, with 69 percent of respondents having an unfavorable view despite him finishing second in the poll. He has come under widespread backlash after he repeated an antisemitic conspiracy theory about COVID-19.

Kennedy's support is strongest among self-described moderates and Republicans, while Williamson is strongest among socialists, pollsters said.

In national polls, Biden holds a similarly wide lead over his primary opponents, and is neck-and-neck with Republican frontrunner former President Trump.

The poll of 743 likely Democratic voters was taken between July 13-17. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.6 percent.

Doug Burgum says his campaign will meet donor threshold for GOP debate https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4105548-doug-burgum-says-his-campaign-will-notch-donor-threshold-for-gop-debate/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 15:23:45 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4105548 North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said that his campaign will meet the donor requirement on Wednesday that's needed to help qualify for the first GOP presidential debate next month.

During an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday, Burgum was asked about his progress of receiving 40,000 unique donors needed to qualify for the Aug. 23 debate in Milwaukee.

The Republican National Committee's (RNC) debate criteria requires candidates to have at least 40,000 unique donors, including at least 200 from 20 or more states each. Candidates must also meet certain polling and pledge requirements.

"We’ll cross 40,000 today, Hugh," Burgum said.

"But we’re not stopping. Yeah, we’re not stopping there. I mean, we know they’ll keep raising the bar. We’ve got some Biden inflation relief gift cards left to give away, so people can still go to DougBurgum.com and donate a dollar or more, and we’re happy to send them a gift card," Burgum added, referencing his fundraising strategy to hand donors $20 gift cards in exchange for $1 donations.

Should Burgum clinch the donor requirement, that would be feat for his campaign given he's been seen as one of the more longshot candidates to enter the race, though the billionaire can help self-finance his campaign.

"I am surprised, but he seems to be polling well enough to, in combination with that donor total, make the debate stage," Hewitt tweeted after his interview with Burgum.

The first GOP presidential debate is roughly one month away, and some Republican presidential contenders have turned to unconventional fundraising strategies to try to meet the RNC's donor criteria.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said he'd raffle off several tickets to see soccer legend Lionel Messi in Miami if they donated to his campaign while biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy said he'll give those who help fundraise for him a 10 percent stake in whatever they help bring in for his campaign.

Plumbers union endorses Biden reelection bid https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4105295-plumbers-union-endorses-biden-reelection-bid/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 13:23:36 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4105295 The top plumbers union endorsed President Biden’s reelection bid on Wednesday, adding to the list of big labor organizations that have supported the president again this cycle.

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry (UA), which represents about 366,000 plumbers, pipefitters and welders, announced its endorsement earlier than it announced in the 2020 cycle.

“The Biden Harris Administration has provided economic opportunity for all United Association members — meaning our members have a fair shot at working family-sustaining jobs while building the future of American infrastructure,” UA general president Mark McManus said in a statement.

The group pointed to Biden’s policies, such as replacing lead service lines, building semiconductor manufacturing facilities and permitting reform, as reasons they wanted to endorse.

UA released a nationwide ad campaign announcing the endorsement, which was backed by a nearly $1 million buy and will run nationwide for four weeks, then only in battleground states for another four weeks.

"This endorsement highlights the groundswell of support we have seen from across the organized labor movement," Julie Chávez Rodriguez, Biden-Harris 2024 campaign manager, said in a statement. "That’s because Joe Biden is the most pro-labor president in history — making historic investments in our country’s manufacturing and fighting for our workers."

Biden’s reelection campaign was endorsed by AFL-CIO in June, along with more than a dozen other unions — like the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the American Federation of Teachers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, National Nurses United and the American Federation of Government Employees.

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) also endorsed Biden earlier in June, citing the infrastructure law as an accomplishment of the administration.

“The unprecedented show of support from labor this early in the campaign unlocks the movement’s powerful organizing abilities and resources to help show how President Biden is delivering more jobs, more manufacturing, and lower costs for American families,” Rodriguez said.

But the president hasn’t had all good luck with unions this cycle. The United Auto Workers union in May said it would hold back from an endorsement, citing concerns over the White House’s focus on electric vehicles.

DeSantis won't say if he will sign federal six-week abortion ban https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4104325-desantis-wont-say-if-he-will-sign-federal-six-week-abortion-ban/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 21:25:23 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4104325 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) declined to say whether he would sign a federal six-week abortion ban during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday.

“I’m pro-life. I will be a pro-life president. And we will support pro-life policies,” he said. “At the same time, I look at what’s going on in the Congress, and, you know, I don’t see them, you know, making very much headway. I think the danger from Congress is if we lose the election, they’re gonna try to nationalize abortion up until the moment of birth.”

Republicans up and down the ballot have struggled to address the issue as they work to appeal to their primary base while also keeping their eye on the broader electorate.

In April, the Florida governor signed a six-week abortion ban in the state; however, the ban will take effect only if that state's current 15-week ban is upheld in an ongoing legal challenge in front of the state Supreme Court.

DeSantis's comments were the latest in which he dodged the question about whether he would sign a similar ban as president at the federal level.

“Look, the Congress is probably not the place you want to put your hopes and dreams if you’re supporting pro-life," he told Fox News's Howard Kurtz on Sunday. "And so I think we’re going to really have a strong bottom up approach. We’re going to be working with states and localities to be able to advance the cause of life.”

DeSantis echoed those comments during a sitdown with conservative media personality Tucker Carlson on Friday.

“I don’t think Rome is built in a day," DeSantis told Carlson. "I think it’s going to take time to make progress in some parts of the country. But as President, I will be somebody who will use the bully pulpit to support governors like Kim Reynolds when she’s got a bill, other states as they advance the cause of life,” DeSantis said.

No Labels founder vows to end third-party effort if it aids Trump  https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4103361-no-labels-founder-vows-to-end-third-party-effort-if-it-aids-trump/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 15:18:42 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4103361 The founder of the political organization No Labels insists the group would end its third-party White House push if such an effort is helping former President Trump.

No Labels founder and CEO Nancy Jacobson in an interview with NBC News declined to say what metrics the group would use to make that choice.

“As a Democrat? Categorically, that will not happen,” Jacobson said in response to a question over concerns that a third-party ballot could take away votes from President Biden. “This effort will never — we’ll pull it down.”

“We will not spoil for either side. The only reason to do this is to win,” she added.

Jacobson reiterated No Labels will only continue its third-party effort if it believes it can win without wasting votes. She said the group will reevaluate the pool of candidates next April, pledging that they will offer their ballot line if Americans do not want either candidate from the two main parties.

“We've said from the beginning, all of our lawyers have said, we're not going to offer our ballot line if it looks like it's going to be a waste of votes at all,” she said.

“I think what we stay true to is that the American people want a choice and they — on both sides. It looks like they don't want the choices that they're given,” Jacobson added.

No Labels has been pushing for a bipartisan ticket to land a third-party bid to the White House and has recently launched a campaign in New Hampshire. Ben Chavis, the Democratic co-chairman of No Labels, also told NBC News last month that the group “is not and will not be a spoiler in favor of Donald Trump in 2024.”

No Labels confirmed to The Hill at the time it will end its third-party push if Biden is ahead in the polls next spring. The group has already appeared to secure its spot on the ballot in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Utah.

The group has also stoked fears among Democrats that its third-party push will create headaches for the Biden campaign. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) headlined the group’s event on Monday, fueling speculation he may run on the group’s bipartisan ticket.

Dorsey, other tech leaders praise Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign: report  https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4103191-dorsey-other-tech-leaders-praise-robert-f-kennedy-jr-s-campaign-report/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 14:34:03 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4103191 Some tech industry titans are praising, and fundraising for, the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a candidate known for spreading conspiracy theories about vaccines and COVID-19.

Kennedy’s long-shot Democratic primary bid against President Biden’s reelection campaign has caught the attention of some of Silicon Valley’s wealthy tech executives, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

In addition to Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, who publicly supported Kennedy’s campaign on Twitter last month, the Journal reported that venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, PayPal founding executive David Sacks and LimeWire founder Mark Gorton have given support to Kennedy’s bid.

Palihapitiya and Sacks co-hosted a fundraiser at Sacks’s mansion in affiliation with Common Sense, a group that is supporting Kennedy, last month, with tickets for a cocktail reception of $2,000 and dinner for $10,000, the Journal reported.

Most of the 75 guests at the San Francisco event were from the tech and crypto industries, Common Sense treasurer and actress Sofia Karstens told the Journal.

Sacks and Palihapitiya did not comment to the Journal.

Gorton, founder of the now shut-down file-sharing site LimeWire, created a super PAC that is supporting Kennedy’s candidacy, the Journal reported. Gorton told the Journal his American Values 2024 super PAC started as an organization focused on combating “pharmaceutical industry corruption.”

“It disgusts me that the Democratic Party has become the party of the neocons and the party of big pharma,” Gorton told the Journal.

He told the paper it is “noble” for Kennedy to run to “reclaim the Democratic party from the corrupt interests.”

Kennedy announced his campaign in April.

The prominent anti-vaccine activist has also had criticism piled on, including from his own sister, over recent remarks about COVID-19.

In a video obtained by the New York Post, Kennedy said COVID-19 was “ethnically targeted” to attack “certain rates disproportionately.”

“COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese,” he said.

After backlash, Kennedy appeared to walk back the comments. On Twitter, he said the New York Post story was “mistaken” and that he “never, ever suggested that the COVID-19 virus was targeted to spare Jews.”

Pro-DeSantis group uses AI version of Trump's voice in new ad  https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4103157-pro-desantis-group-uses-ai-version-of-trumps-voice-in-new-ad/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 14:15:04 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4103157 A super PAC in support of Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) run for president used an artificial intelligence (AI) version of former President Trump’s voice in a new ad focused on Trump’s recent attacks on Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R).

The super PAC, Never Back Down, released a 30-second ad Tuesday morning in defense of Reynolds after Trump recently lashed out at her for not endorsing a Republican presidential candidate. The super PAC confirmed to The Hill it used AI technology to “give voice to Trump’s words and Truth Social.”

The AI-generated narration takes part of the former president’s Truth Social post last week, where he wrote, “I opened up the governor position for Kim Reynolds, and when she fell behind, I endorsed her, did big rallies and she won. Now, she wants to remain ‘neutral,’ I don’t invite her to events.”

The ad goes on to argue, “Trump should fight Democrats, not Republicans.”

Trump’s criticism of Reynolds comes after a New York Times report detailing frustration within the former president’s campaign over Reynolds’s appearances with DeSantis when he stopped in Iowa for his campaign.

Reynolds has said she would remain neutral and will not endorse a candidate in the GOP presidential race to help all candidates feel welcome in the state.

Trump’s swipe at Reynolds prompted criticism from DeSantis and other GOP candidates who voiced their support of Reynolds.

Trump will be in Iowa on Tuesday night, where he'll sit down for a town hall hosted by Fox News’s Sean Hannity.

Rick Scott gets Democratic challenger in Navy veteran Phil Ehr https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4102009-rick-scott-gets-democratic-challenger-in-navy-veteran-phil-ehr/ Mon, 17 Jul 2023 20:05:34 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4102009 Navy veteran and former congressional candidate Phil Ehr (D) announced on Monday that he's launching a Senate bid to take on Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) next year in Florida.

Ehr last ran for Congress in 2020 against Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida's 1st Congressional District, losing by more than 30 points.

"A storm is brewing in Florida. For eight years, politicians like Rick Scott, [Gov. Ron] DeSantis, Gaetz and [Sen. Marco] Rubio have stood by [former President] Trump's war on the truth," Ehr said in a more than two-minute campaign ad launching his campaign.

"They're the axis of lies, spreading disinformation at all costs. They want to keep us confused, lost in the storm to hold onto power. And Rick Scott is among the worst," Ehr continues, before targeting Scott over his comments on Social Security and Medicare and for a Medicare fraud scandal that took place in the late 1990s.

Scott's team noted Ehr's defeat in 2020 in responding to the challenger.

“It says everything you need to know about Chuck Schumer and the Florida Dems’ recruitment efforts that the best they can do is a guy who lost a congressional race two cycles ago by 30 points," Scott campaign spokeswoman Priscilla Ivasco said in a statement.

The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Scott's seat as "like Republican."

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose launches bid for Senate https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4101068-ohio-secretary-of-state-frank-larose-launches-bid-for-ohio-senate/ Mon, 17 Jul 2023 12:39:40 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4101068 Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) announced Monday he's launching a U.S. Senate campaign, setting up a three-way GOP primary as Republicans look to take on Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) next fall.

"I've always believed with hard work and focus that anything is possible. But lately, it feels like our country is slipping away from us," LaRose said in a one-minute ad launching his campaign.

"Rising prices are hurting families, and open borders bringing in drugs and crime. Parents are being cut out of their children's education. As a dad to three young girls, I know something has to change. Someone needs to step up and take on the fight," he added.

LaRose joins two other major Republican candidates in the race for Brown's seat — businessman Bernie Moreno and state Sen. Matt Dolan. Moreno was endorsed by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) in May.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who chairs the Senate GOP campaign arm, told CBS News last week his group is planning to stay neutral in the primary — a notable development given the group has waded into Republican Senate primaries in other states.

Brown is among three Senate Democrats up for reelection next year who represent states former President Trump won in 2020.

The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Brown's seat as a "toss-up."

Trump gloats over big win in Turning Point USA straw poll  https://thehill.com/elections/4101019-trump-gloats-over-big-win-in-turning-point-usa-straw-poll/ Mon, 17 Jul 2023 11:44:29 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4101019

Former President Trump gloated over his big win in Sunday's Turning Point USA straw poll, calling the results a “blowout.”

“Just heard that I (WE!) won the big Turning Point Straw Poll in a BLOWOUT, getting 85.7% of the Vote," Trump posted on Truth Social.

"Ron DeSanctimonious came in a solid 3rd with 4.3%, Vivek got 2%, and Sloppy Chris Christie, as usual, got a big, fat, ZERO!" the former president added. "Turning Point put on a GREAT event in West Palm Beach, setting all kinds of records, including in attendance!”

The Turning Point straw poll showed Trump garnering more than 85 percent support among attendees of the conservative group's event. Michigan businessman Perry Johnson (R), who announced his long-shot bid for the White House in March, followed with nearly 8 percent.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) came in third place with 4.3 percent support and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy had 2 percent. Other GOP presidential candidates, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), registered 0.0 percent support, according to the poll.

When asked who their second choice for president would be, Ramaswamy topped the poll with about 51 percent support, followed by Trump with about 21 percent. DeSantis received about 13 percent, and Scott received nearly 6 percent. No other candidate had more than 5 percent support.

Organizers noted attendees were asked not to list their first choice candidate as also their second choice candidate, but some Trump supporters listed him as both anyway.

Also, more than 30 percent of attendees said former Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, who repeatedly denied the results of her election, should be the vice president. Twenty-four percent said Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla) should be vice president, and nearly 23 percent picked Ramaswamy.

Trump and fellow GOP hopefuls Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R) and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) also spoke at the event over the weekend.

In its release, Trafalgar Group, which published the poll, did not disclose the number of people who participated in the survey or margin or error estimates.

Turning Point attendees meet Asa Hutchinson with boos, chants of 'Trump'  https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4100601-turning-point-attendees-meet-asa-hutchinson-with-boos-chants-of-trump/ Sun, 16 Jul 2023 23:26:50 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4100601

GOP presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson was greeted by boos and chants of “Trump” Sunday when he walked onto the stage to speak at the Turning Point Action Conference in West Palm Beach, Fla..

Despite this, Hutchinson welcomed the audience and continued introducing himself to attendees. “I am delighted to be here today to express my support for young people being engaged in the political arena and fighting for the conservative cause,” he said.

Hutchinson went on to discuss recently finishing eight years as Arkansas's governor before he “handed the reins of state government over to Sarah Huckabee Sanders,” to which the audience cheered.

Chants and rumbles of “Trump” rose as the audience started again a few moments later, after Hutchinson said, “As Republicans, we need to be able to fight for our cause. We need to be able to build the spirit of our cause and to bring in independent and those like-minded folks that can support us and win in 2024.”

The GOP hopeful continued while “Trump” chants persisted, even pausing for a few seconds until the crowd quieted.

It was not all pushback for Hutchinson, with some of the crowd cheering when he discussed certain policy choices such as his ban on biological men competing in women’s sports.

Other GOP presidential candidates including Trump and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez also spoke at the conference.

Hutchinson formally announced his bid for president in April, positioning himself as a “non-Trump,” candidate. He called out the former president to drop out of the race, previously telling The Hill, “The last thing that we need is another Joe Biden-Donald Trump race in 2024.”

A Morning Consult poll released last week showed Trump as the front-runner of the Republican race, with 56 percent of potential GOP primary voters saying they would back the former president, compared to Hutchinson’s 1 percent backing.

Biden campaign touts fundraising numbers, knocks Republicans' totals https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4100416-biden-campaign-touts-fundraising-numbers-knocks-republicans-totals/ Sun, 16 Jul 2023 19:39:20 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4100416 President Biden’s campaign touted its recent fundraising successes and knocked Republican candidates for an “embarrassing lack of enthusiasm” for their campaigns, in a statement Sunday.

Biden’s campaign raked in $72 million in the most recent financial disclosure report, bringing the total cash on hand to $77 million. Former President Trump, a Republican presidential candidate, reported raising more than $35 million in the second quarter. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a GOP presidential candidate, raised $20 million.

“The numbers are in, and there’s no hiding the stunning and embarrassing lack of enthusiasm for the Republican candidates running for president. President Biden and Vice President Harris significantly out-raised the entire GOP field last quarter, out-raising Donald Trump by more than 2:1 and Ron DeSantis by more than 3:1,” the Biden-Harris campaign’s communications director, Michael Tyler, said in a statement.

“Not only are the Republican candidates raising significantly less money than Team Biden-Harris, they are spending significantly more competing against each other in a bruising primary contest,” Tyler continued.

Biden’s campaign numbers include the backing of the Democratic National Committee – an advantage neither Republican candidates, nor the two long-shot Democratic candidates, have.

Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson raised more than $920,000 in the recent quarter. Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. raised $6.3 million this past quarter.

DeSantis attributes Trump rise in polling to 'sympathy' over Manhattan indictment https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4100380-desantis-attributes-trump-rise-in-polling-to-sympathy-over-manhattan-indictment/ Sun, 16 Jul 2023 18:44:16 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4100380 Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis Sunday attributed former President Trump’s growing lead in polls to the public sympathy he received after being indicted in New York.

DeSantis said he shared the view with “a lot of people” that Trump’s indictment over alleged hush money payments leading up to the 2016 election was a “miscarriage of justice” in an interview on Fox News’s “MediaBuzz” with Howard Kurtz. That sympathy, along with more media coverage, DeSantis claimed, explained the widening gap between Trump and DeSantis in polls.

“At the end of the day, the [Manhattan District Attorney Alvin] Bragg indictment just elevated him,” DeSantis said of Trump. “And it wasn't so much that people were doing it because he was indicted. I think a lot of people, including me, believe that it was a miscarriage of justice.”

"I think there was a lot of sympathy. But then, I think just dominating the media coverage,” DeSantis added.

Trump has been dominating recent polls. A Morning Consult poll showed recently that, among GOP voters surveyed, 56 percent favored Trump in a hypothetical primary. DeSantis came in second at a distant 17 percent.

An April poll from Morning Consult had Trump’s support still at 56 percent among GOP voters surveyed, but DeSantis came in second at 23 percent. In January, the gap was even closer between the two leading candidates: A Morning Consult poll had Trump at 48 percent support among hypothetical GOP primary voters, while DeSantis had 31 percent.

DeSantis said he was not concerned about national polls, noting he was spending significant time in some early primary states.

DeSantis team a little lighter after campaign sheds staff https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4099736-desantis-team-a-little-lighter-after-campaign-sheds-staff/ Sun, 16 Jul 2023 02:43:55 +0000 https://thehill.com/?p=4099736 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R) 2024 campaign is reorganizing amid its struggle to meet fundraising expectations — including shedding staff, a campaign spokesperson confirmed to the Hill on Saturday.

The team let go fewer than 10 employees on Thursday, primarily from its event-planning team, as was first reported by Politico. The campaign spokesperson said the decision would help boost the governor's chances of defeating President Biden if he wins the Republican nomination.

"Americans are rallying behind Ron DeSantis and his plan to reverse Joe Biden’s failures and restore sanity to our nation, and his momentum will only continue as voters see more of him in-person, especially in Iowa," campaign spokesperson Andrew Romeo, who also verified that the staffers were let go, told The Hill in a statement.

"Defeating Joe Biden and the $72 million behind him will require a nimble and candidate driven campaign, and we are building a movement to go the distance," he added.

DeSantis's campaign confirmed on Friday that two other key staffers would exit the team and shift to assist a political nonprofit to help boost support for him.

Despite a perceived lag in his campaign efforts, DeSantis managed to raise $20 million in the second quarter after only being in the race for six weeks, according to his Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing. His campaign touted it as the largest filing for a non-incumbent Republican candidate in the first quarter of their candidacy in more than a decade.

But, the Florida governor continues to place second to former President Trump in Republican primary polling. Trump’s campaign confirmed to The Hill on Wednesday that it brought in more than $35 million during the second quarter.

DeSantis has recently turned his sights on early primary and caucus states, spending the last two days campaigning in Iowa.

“Donald Trump gave us an opening in Iowa this week, and we’re taking it,” Romeo said, according to Politico.

The Hill's Caroline Vakil contributed to this report.
